Making Elements EP

Making a new record can come naturally and this one fell in to place after much deliberation.

Coming off the back of a record I did not like, I wanted to make a set of tracks that resonated what I felt, had my current music tastes and still stayed true to my sound.

I wrote all the lyrics for the EP in 2 weeks (apart from the odd few lines here and there). At the time of writing the EP I had been made unemployed once again and was feeling pissed off. I finally found the urgency to make music, even tho I was out of work and feeling down I felt the most creative and let the tunes flow.

I guess the whole record could have been ‘bigger’ but I wanted it to feel natural with a underground feeling, nothing fancy, nothing glossy and nothing fake. It is the most subdued record to date and has made me feel that I can carry on this braincell harmonics malarky.

I often think about shropshire, its my official home and always will be. It is a strange place for many reasons. The most striking thing for me is that it is FULL of creative people, almost all my friends are making something, producing film/music, or building businesses, this is most likely due to there being nothing to do, you either sit and wallow or make some cool shit.

Music is a big deal in the hills, beneath it’s red faced locals and greenery, there are people who know and love music. This was the case even before the internet, I remember going to school and having conversations with people who were up in the game.

Most of my friends have either left or are leaving the hills now, but if you meet someone from shropshire they will soon refer to it as the centre of the universe (a bit of a overstatement it is a little west). Part of my new job requires me to film in rural locations and I always like trekking back to the shire briefly and remembering the places I grew up. I hope that at least once a year (like it has been for the past few) we all meet up and sink some pots and make some hay.

It will always be home and I am never going to cut my ties with the SY6 no matter how hard I try, it just wont let me.

I did not mean to make a new ‘Braincell Harmonics’ Record so soon but this time I really wanted to prove (to myself) I could make a solid record still!

My best work has come out of feeling lost and generally writing about past experiences. Some of my best work to date I think was ‘Tales from the broken hearted’, 4 short songs that were supposed to be included as part of my first full length LP but they did not sit well but as a little EP they worked just fine. The tone was low, it was emo to its core and was new. It got me out of a rut where I was trying to make DJ shadow esq tunes with little equipment and a low standard of ‘rap’.

After ‘Tales from the broken hearted’ was out my system I went to produce 2 solid records, one of them was ‘Etiquette’. This EP took a more ‘rap’ direction (my skills picked up a bit) and did not concern itself with wallowing in self-pity, it was a harder edge without being aggressive but had an energy to it.

After a 6 month gap in Thailand where I did not make any music at all (this was the first time in 7 + years), I came back with a ‘traveller’ vibe and made a record called ‘Analogue Dayze’ I do like it (I don’t record songs I hate) but it just seemed flat after the rush of ‘Etiquette’. I like all the tunes individually but as a package it feels a little predictable and did not bring many new ideas. The EP had a dream pop vibe that was cool but I knew as soon as I put it out that I could do better but did not know how.

Since ‘Analogue Dayze’ I have scrapped abut 5 albums worth of tunes, I became restless and could not find my voice again, there was only so many times I could write about past love and childhood nostalgia. Maybe I was too happy? How could I get into the down and out vibe? Life seemed to do that for me, a few things changed that made me get a musical ‘chubby’. I also have been listening to electronic music again after a slight hiatus of listening to bands (I still do). All of a sudden electronic music spoke to me again and a new wave of producers came out the woodwork and gave me some much-needed inspiration.

The past 2 months I have been the most creative I have been in a long time, I know my new record will be one that I will want to listen to as a fan (I always wanted to make music for myself first) it is not going to change the world but I have found my grove again.

I have given a few close friends a listen to my new sounds and I having a very positive response, more than I did when I played them ‘Analogue Dayze’ for the first time. I have tracks on the new EP that sound like they could have been off ‘Tales from the broken hearted’ as well as some stone cold hip-hop and some new styles. I just hope I can get in out in the next few months!

I got thinking recently about sound and how most people don’t listen to music how it should be listened to. Artists spend weeks/months mixing and mastering to get the right blend to showcase their hard work. Nowadays people play music off laptops, tablets, and phones without ever plugging in any speakers that have any real clout or depth. I have come foul to this and do my best to go out my way to give a first play of a new record the respect it deserves and play it on some half decent speakers, after that I do get lazy and play stuff on my laptop as I browse the net/kick it.

The whole notion of this hit me when I bought a CD (first one for like 5 years) and played it in my car. I got so used to listening to music on my ipod, (which connects to the stereo via an itrip), I had forgotten the quality you get fro a CD, so when the sound came out the speakers I nearly sharted in excitement.

Of course the best quality (in my opinion) is from vinyl, but I do not have much of that (that I do not use just for sampling) and I know CD’s do not technically sound ‘perfect’ but I just find it strange that most people now listen to the majority of their tunes though crappy mobile devices and dump headphones.

There is a whole issue of compression that comes into equation and contributes to the downfall in sound quality of commercial music. I have noticed that some iTunes purchases just sound a bit shit. It seems that we are loosing quality in exchange for convenience. On one hand it is wicked how we get music now, on the other it is a shame that it is so dismissive.

The whole event of buying a new record has been replaced. (the whole ‘is HMV valid’ issue) I do feel that it is the internet that has won and will continue to bring us new ways of exploring and buying music, which is cool, I dig it but the argument is still valid, buy a CD, pop it in the tray and turn it up!
